Meh。 Somehow this book took me over 2 months to finish and entirely decimated my 2021 40 book reading goal。 I hate to be dismissive of what is considered a great work， given its historical context。 But for someone without that context—or appreciation for its subversive and satirical role in Soviet Russia—as a standalone work， it was a bit of a slog。 It's really neither plot driven nor character driven。 The dialogue all seems stilted （I know the devil is visiting the Soviet Union， but I'm not sur Meh。 Somehow this book took me over 2 months to finish and entirely decimated my 2021 40 book reading goal。 I hate to be dismissive of what is considered a great work， given its historical context。 But for someone without that context—or appreciation for its subversive and satirical role in Soviet Russia—as a standalone work， it was a bit of a slog。 It's really neither plot driven nor character driven。 The dialogue all seems stilted （I know the devil is visiting the Soviet Union， but I'm not sure that justifies the entire populace making devil-puns。 。 。）I struggle as well to find a deep， thematic meaning in the book 。 。 。 That even the devil understands truth， but the Soviet Union does not？ That the government of the Soviet Union is about as cowardly as Pontius Pilate when struck with the truth （note the famous quote， "what is truth？"） and prefers to propagate lies？ That Soviet writers （propagandists， if you will） are just plain bad？ Or that it takes some devilish actions to procure yourself an apartment in Soviet-era Moscow？ Or that all things—including Soviet kitsch—will come to an end？Perhaps the beauty of the work is that it somehow resists any simple interpretation。Either way， "Meh。" 。。。more

Of the fewer than 10 books I have read in my life， this one is clearly the best。 I acquired much cultural capital while reading it and implore in you to partake in this book， or some other， mystical Soviet era Russian literature if you fancy since I found it so thoroughly enjoyable！
